Aug. 9, 2012

EASTON, Pa. - Lafayette Field hockey Head Coach Andrew Griffiths has named former University of Connecticut stand-out Rayell Heistand as an Assistant Coach.

"Rayell is a really positive addition to our staff," Griffiths said. "She brings a lot of team experience from a successful NCAA experience over the past four years at UConn. She will also bring elite playing skill to our training sessions. As a member of the USA National Developmental Team, she will help to raise the tempo and skill level in our practices, and also contribute significant technical expertise."

Heistand, a Hamburg, Pa. native, joins the Leopards after graduating from the University of Connecticut in May with a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Allied Health Services. A three-time All-Big East First Team Selection, she played in 105 games in four years for the Huskies scoring 13 goals, with five assists and contributed three defensive saves. She was named to the Big East All-Tournament Team and Mideast All-Region Team in 2009, 2010, and 2011, while earning Second-Team All-America Honors in 2010 and 2011. Her team advanced to the Final Four in 2011 before losing to North Carolina in double overtime.

In addition to her achievements at UConn, Heistand was named to the Junior World Cup USA Field Hockey U-21 Team in 2009, the USA U-21 National Field Hockey Team in 2010, and the USA National Women's Field Hockey Development Squad in 2011 and 2012. She has worked as a private lesson instructor and has participated as a coach in numerous field hockey camps since 2009, including the Lafayette Field Hockey Camp in 2011 and 2012.

In the classroom, she earned National Field Hockey Coaches Association National Academic Squad honors, as well as Director of Athletics' Honor Roll and Big East Academic All Star Team honors all four years at the University of Connecticut.

Heistand joins assistant coach Jennifer Stone and Griffiths, who is in his sixth season. The Leopards open their season Aug. 26 at Rappolt Field, hosting Ball State at 1 p.m.
