Spotted on Campus With...Cara Lyons
July 13, 2009
While things may have slowed down in the Lafayette athletic department during the summer months, many student-athletes remain on College Hill to pursue various academic and athletic endeavors. Lafayette College Athletics has decided to catch up with some of the student-athletes to see what they're doing for the summer and to get to know them a little better. Junior field hockey player Cara Lyons, an EXCEL scholar, talked about her summer so far. What are your plans for your summer at Lafayette? Are you taking a class, doing research, working out? I am at Lafayette this summer mainly for EXCEL research. On top of the research, I also decided to take a class to make better use of my time here. The daily workouts are also a top priority, but they are easy to complete with everything so accessible on campus, which is great! What's your major and what do you like about your major? Civil and Environmental Engineering - I love my major because it's challenging. It keeps me on my toes and I can't wait to apply what I'm learning to real-life situations. What is your role on the team? I'd say I'm the "filler." I'm not too picky about where I play and because of that, I get tossed around wherever I'm needed. What is your earliest field hockey memory? I started with Saturday mornings in third grade. All I remember are the competition relay races we'd do in the gym! What can you take from your sport and incorporate into everyday life? Perseverance. I'm not the most talented athlete but I've learned to work hard on the field which gives me a better attitude to my involvements off the field. A talent I'd like to have is... I've always wished I could sing! The sport I'm worst at is... Soccer. I've never played and when we play for fun at practice I avoid the ball. Something about me that others would be surprised to hear is... The thing I miss most about high school is dance. I took lessons from age three to 18! What is your favorite roadtrip (college or otherwise) and why? Any time we go to American - the Double Tree Hotel beds and cookies! What teammate does the funniest impression of your coach? Ali (Schoch) - probably provides the most laughs at all times. What is your favorite phrase or saying? "Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game." TV show I can't stop watching... CSI, and I've been addicted to Harper's Island this summer! What is the greatest thing you can learn from a loss? It does no good to mope, you have to learn what you can and move on. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? I'd love to go to Italy. You have an entire day to do whatever you want. Where do you go and what do you do? My bed to relax since that doesn't happen too often! What do you like most about Lafayette? I love that Lafayette is a small community. I enjoy being able to balance a number of activities while, most importantly, earning a degree from such a well respected institution. What is your favorite class and why? I really can't pick a favorite. I love the variety! Who is the most influential person in your life? My late best guy friend from home. His number 24 is on my stick to remind me to always give everything I've got - every day is a gift! Word Association: Field Hockey: My life Early morning practices: Prowlers, yuck. Your coaches: Dedicated Your teammates: Family Lafayette-Lehigh rivalry: Intense Preseason: Exhausting Strength & Conditioning Coach(es): 6 a.m. Rappolt Field: Second home!
