Stone Names Four Captains for 2013 Leopards

EASTON, Pa. – Seniors Kelsey Gula, Kristin Heaney and Haley Keenan, along with junior Brittany Blass have been named captains for the 2013 Lafayette field hockey team, head coach Jennifer Stone announced Thursday.
Key members of the back-to-back Patriot League-Champion Leopards, this group has been a part of 37 wins over the past three seasons and NCAA Tournament participation the last two years. In 2012, Lafayette became the first Patriot League school to earn at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament.
"The team has elected a very strong leadership group for this fall,” Stone said. “Haley, Kelsey, Kristin, and Brittany each fill a different role, but collectively have a very united voice. They have all proven themselves as strong leaders both on and off the field and I am looking forward to watching their leadership skills grow and develop throughout the summer and into the fall."
Gula, a Newtown Square, Pa. native, appeared in all 20 games for the Leopards in 2012, starting one against Rutgers (10/14). The senior scored a goal in back-to-back games against Lehigh (10/27) and Georgetown (10/28) to close out the regular season. She is a two-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
Hailing from Allendale, N.J., Heaney started all 20 games at the forward position last season. The Economics major tallied two goals and three assists on the year, including a goal and an assist in the 7-0 defeat over Georgetown (10/28).
In her sophomore and junior seasons, Heaney was known for her clutch performances in the Patriot League Tournament. In 2010, she scored a key goal in a 3-2 victory in the League semifinal game against Bucknell and she deflected in the game-winning tally in the Patriot League championship game in 2011. Heaney is also a two-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
Keenan stepped into a much more prominent role during the 2012 season, starting all 20 games for the Leopards in the midfield. She was named to the Patriot League All-Tournament Team after recording a goal in the semifinal matchup with Colgate. Keenan tallied 10 goals and three assists on the year and is a two-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
Blass rounds out the group as the lone junior to earn captaincy status. Blass was a First Team All-Patriot League performer last season and was named to the NFHCA All-Mideast Region squad. The Mountain Top, Pa. native set a single-season Patriot League record for Defensive Player of the Week awards, picking up six weekly honors.
Blass was also selected to the Patriot League All-Tournament Team after recording a goal against Colgate in the Patriot League semifinal game. The Neuroscience major finished the season with seven goals and one assist. She tallied two goals and one assist for a season-high five points in the win at Holy Cross (10/20).
The Leopards will begin their run for a three-peat on Sept. 1 when Iowa travels to Rappolt Field to kickoff the 2013 season at 12 p.m.
