EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette Athletic Department held its annual Senior Student-Athlete reception on Monday afternoon and announced the recipients of the department's two prestigious awards - the Class of 1913 Trophy and the Charles L. Albert '08 Award. Soccer player John Griffith and track standout Osasumwen Izevbigie received the 1913 Trophies, while field hockey's Maggie Condon and football's Andy Romans were presented with the Charles L. Albert Trophies.

The Class of 1913 Trophy is given annually to the senior male and female student-athletes who have attained the greatest distinction as both a scholar and an athlete, as voted upon by the head coaches and Lafayette administration.

The Charles L. Albert Award is awarded each year to the senior male and female student-athletes who are judged to be the most outstanding athletes.

John Griffith, male recipient of the Class of 1913 Trophy

Griffith, a Biology major who boasts an overall grade-point average (GPA) of 3.57, is the first men's soccer player since 2006 (Mike Tortora) to win the award. He is a four-year member of the Dean's List and graduated a semester early in December 2008 when he also completed his honors thesis in biology. He served as a peer mentor for two years and was a peer tutor as a sophomore. Griffith conducted EXCEL research from the summer of 2007 through the fall of 2008, and will attend medical school at Drexel this August.

On the soccer field, he started 19 of the 20 games in which he played this fall as a central defender. A team captain this year, he appeared in 34 career games with 30 starts. The Leopards advanced to the Patriot League Tournament all four years Griffith was a member of the squad, including championship appearances from 2005-07.

Sue Izevbigie, female recipient of the Class of 1913 Trophy

A member of the indoor and outdoor track and field teams, Izevbigie is a Philosophy major and Government and Law minor who maintains an overall GPA of 3.70. She is a Marquis Scholar and a four-year member of the College's Dean's List. Izevbigie received the Otis Ellis '89 Scholar-Athlete Award in 2008 and was honored with the 2008 James F. Bryant '40 Excellence Award, given each year to a student-athlete who excels in academics and does noteworthy service. She graduated in December and plans to attend law school at Columbia University in the fall of 2009.

Izevbigie is a five-time letterwinner and three-time Patriot League champion. She captured the 20-pound indoor weight throw title as a sophomore and is a two-time outdoor champion in the shot put. Izevbigie was named to the All-Patriot League First Team three times (two outdoor, one indoor) and is the school recordholder in the indoor and outdoor shot put.

Andy Romans, male recipient of the Charles L. Albert Trophy

Romans is the male recipient of the Charles L. Albert Trophy. The two-time Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, Romans made 96 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, had 1.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries and one blocked kick for the Leopards in 2008, who finished 7-4 overall.

The team captain and four-year letterwinner guided a 2008 Lafayette defense that placed first in the Patriot League an in the top 20 nationally in rushing, total and scoring defense. Romans finished his career with three All-Patriot League selections and 326 tackles, good for 10th place among active FCS players. He was a member of two Patriot League championship teams - 2005 and 2006 - that made two NCAA appearances.

Currently enrolled in three history courses and an African studies class, Romans will graduate in May with a degree in History. He has plans to pursue a professional football career.

Maggie Condon, female recipient of the Charles L. Albert Trophy

Finally, Condon is a four-year starter for the field hockey squad and a three-time All-Patriot League First Team member who started all but four of her 74 career games. A two-time captain, she led the team with 15 goals this past fall, eight of which were game winners. Over her four seasons, she amassed 33 career goals and 13 assists for 79 points. The Leopards advanced to the Patriot League Tournament in Condon's final three seasons on College Hill, all of which saw her named to the All-Tournament Team.

Off the field, the Economics and Business major is a two-year member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and has been a member of the Sports Marketing Committee for the past three years. This semester, she has been involved with the Reading is Fundamental Program as a tutor.

All senior student-athletes were honed by the athletic department at the reception, as each was presented with a commemorative plaque.
