Lafayette Field Hockey Finishes Third at Longstreth Cup Challenge
April 24, 2008
EASTON, Pa. - Lafayette field hockey placed third of the 10 teams competing in the Longstreth Cup Challenge behind Quinnipiac and Rutgers. The Leopards had a 6-2-4 record at the conclusion of the tournament.
Sacred Heart, Hofstra, Rider, Monmouth, Bryant, Rhode Island and Fairfield competed in the three-day tournament. The Leopards finished one point behind Rutgers and two points behind the champion, Quinnipiac. Lafayette allowed the fewest goals against among the 10-team field.
"We had the opportunity to win the tournament if we had won one more game on Sunday, so we are disappointed not to take it when it was there for us," said head coach Andrew Griffiths said. "However, the spring is about trying new things, and we were able to do that successfully."
The Leopards return five of the top six leading scorers from the 2007 squad. Thirteen letterwinners will return for the 2008 season and will be joined by eight student-athletes as part of Griffith's first recruiting class and the program's second scholarship group.
"As a group of players and coaches that have only been working together for eight months, this time is really about building a foundation for the future," Griffiths said. "We are certainly physically stronger now than we were in the fall, and we now must continue to develop mental strength and skills to the next level as well."
Two weeks of spring training remain for Lafayette field hockey with competitions on April 26 against Drexel, Delaware and Columbia beginning at 9 a.m. The Leopards host an alumni game on May 3 to mark the conclusion of the spring season.
