EASTON, Pa. - Playing for the second time in less than 24 hours, the Lafayette field hockey squad rode the momentum of yesterday's victory over Lehigh to secure a 2-0 win over Rutgers on Sunday afternoon at Rappolt Field.

It was the Leopards that established themselves inside the Rutgers defense early and often in the opening minutes and ultimately forced three consecutive corners in the eighth minute of the contest.

Lafayette continued to pressure the Scarlet Knight defense and got on the board with just under 22 minutes left in the first half. Senior Kelly Hilovsky's corner found the stick of Meghan Cicchi. Cicchi's shot made its way through the Rutgers defense and was deflected back into the back of the cage by Hilovsky to give the Leopards the 1-0 advantage.

The Leopards grabbed an insurance goal in the second half when a pair of freshmen connected to cause a penalty stroke. Freshman Emily Valeo took a pass and turned near midfield and hit fellow classmate Deanna DiCroce in stride down the sideline.

DiCroce broke towards the goal and as the Rutgers goalkeeper came out to take down the angle, DiCroce was tackled and awarded the penalty stroke.

The freshman stepped to the line and put the ball into the upper left half of the cage to give Lafayette the 2-0 lead and eventual final score.

For the second consecutive day, the Leopard defense was stellar, notching another shutout on the afternoon. Goalkeeper Kelsey Andersen was only forced to make one save on the afternoon.

Lafayette forced six corners to the Scarlet Knights' three and outshot Rutgers 10-2 in the game.

Head Coach Andrew Griffiths was thoroughly pleased with the team's weekend effort and results.

"I'm really pleased to get another shutout today," Griffiths said following the game.

"Kelsey was great when she had to be and our defense, Cicchi in the backfield stopped a lot of dangerous attacks. To hold Rutgers, a good team to a couple shots is excellent. We took our chances today, it was a great weekend for us and we're looking forward to getting back on Wednesday against Drexel."

The Leopards now turn their attention to a midweek matchup at Drexel. The game is set for Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in Philadelphia.
