Field Hockey Suffers Setback In Patriot League Opener
Sept. 30, 2006
WORCESTER, Mass. (www.lafayette.edu) - In the Patriot League opener for both teams, Lafayette fell by a 4-1 score on the road at Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Maggie Condon netted the Leopards' lone score on the day. Holy Cross (7-3, PL 1-0) opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, as Susie Whelan beat Lafayette (1-8, PL 0-1) keeper Jill Lambert on a penalty stroke to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead that would stand until the break. A pass from Sara O'Coin found Tara Welch for the second score of the game, as Holy Cross went up 2-0 at the 43:41 mark. Welch then assisted on the ensuing goal, as Kristin Schultz found the net in the 58th minute to give the Crusaders a 3-0 cushion. Lafayette trimmed the deficit with Condon's goal less than a minute later, as senior forward Maggie DeFilippo's pass found Condon right in front of the goal to put the Leopards on the board at 59:05. However, the Leopards' spark was not enough, as Welch registered her second goal on the afternoon six seconds later. Despite the 4-1 result, Holy Cross just edged Lafayette in the shot column, 14-13. Condon led the way with three shots, while DeFilippo and freshman Amanda Saber tallied two apiece. The Leopards owned an 8-3 advantage on penalty corners. Lambert played all 70 minutes in the cage and collected four saves. Erin Singleton totaled five saves for Holy Cross. The Leopards return to the Rappolt Field turf for a non-conference tilt against La Salle on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
