Seniors Slated to Lead in 2011-12
Nov. 10, 2011
EASTON, Pa. - Head Coach Dianne Nolan has chosen seniors Melissa Downey, Sarah McGorry and Alexandra Serowoky as captains of the Lafayette women's basketball team for the upcoming 2011-12 season. The trio leads a squad that returns nine student-athletes and welcomes six newcomers into the fold.
Downey ran the point in 27 games last season with 19 starts. She averaged 2.7 points and 2.1 rebounds per contest and led the Leopards in assists for the second consecutive season. Downey, a Chemisty major, was also a team captain in the 2009-10 campaign.
An Economics and Business major, McGorry averaged 5.7 points and 5.5 rebounds while appearing in all 30 games (23 starts) last season. She was recipient of the inaugural Pat Fisher "Hold the Rope" Award in 2010-11 as the player who best exemplifies the legendary coach's commitment to Lafayette women's basketball.
Serowoky did not see game action last season due to a knee injury. She has appeared in 27 games in her career, which has been plagued by knee trouble, and is a three-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll as a Design & Media Studies major.
The Leopards, who finished at 11-19 overall and 4-10 in the Patriot League last season, open the new campaign on Nov. 11 at Rider. The home slate begins against Princeton on Nov. 14, and Patriot League action kicks off at Kirby Sports Center on Jan. 7 with a visit from defending champion Navy.
