Women's Basketball Fails to Hold off Navy in Game's Final Minute
Feb. 14, 2009
EASTON, Pa. - Angela Myers secured Navy's 60-57 win over Lafayette on a fastbreak layup with 15 seconds to play that gave the Mids the three-point edge. Navy's K.C. Gordon missed two critical free throws with 14 seconds on the clock to give the Leopards one last chance to force overtime, but Cristin Zavocki's three-pointer bounced off the rim as time expired. The Leopards, who dropped their sixth straight game, outperformed Navy in nearly every area of the game. Lafayette (8-17, 2-8) shot an impressive 50 percent from the field while holding the Mids to a 38 percent showing. Lafayette also pulled down 31 rebounds to Navy's 28, and had two more assists (13 to Navy's 11). The Midshipmen (13-12, 6-4) did commit only five turnovers, however, while Lafayette's 14 miscues led to 16 Navy points. Emily Garner recorded her second straight double-double (15 points, 10 rebounds) to lead the Leopards, while Amanda Smith scored a career-best 12 points. Senior Jessica Spicer chipped in 11. Navy opened up a four-point lead (7-3) less than four minutes into the action after an Angela Myers fastbreak layup. Zavocki tied the game (12-12) with a short jumper at 13:43 and the Leopards took their first lead (14-12) on Garner's jumper at the 12-minute mark. Navy led 22-20 before LaKeisha Wright knotted the game at 22. Smith put the Leopards ahead 24-22 with a jumper at 2:35 and that score stood as the teams headed into the locker rooms. Lafayette opened the second half on a 9-4 run to take a 33-26 lead with 16 minutes remaining. The Midshipmen would not give in, however, and Lafayette lost the lead for the first time in the second half when Kristin Bowen sank a fade away jumper that made it 48-47 with more than four minutes to play. Myers converted a three-point play with 41 seconds on the clock to break a 55-all tie, but Garner came through with two clutch free throws of her own to keep it a one-point ballgame (58-57) with 25 seconds to play. Myers responded with her fastbreak layup which proved to be the game-winning play. The Leopards are back on the road Wednesday with a 7 p.m. game at Bucknell. Postgame Notes:
