Kirby was a three-sport athlete at Lafayette and has been a Trustee and major benefactor to the College since his graduation in 1942, during most of which time he has served as the president of the F.M. Kirby Foundation. The College has received numerous gifts from the F.M. Kirby Foundation over the years, including the construction of the Kirby House, Kirby Hall, the Kirby Hall of Civil Rights, the Allan P. Kirby Field House, the Allan P. Kirby Sports Center and the recent renovations to Fisher Stadium

Kirby was a letterwinner in football, swimming and wrestling at Lafayette. He was a member of the undefeated 1940 football team, whose 9-0 record included a 19-0 defeat of Army. The Leopards also won all four meetings against archrival Lehigh during his years on the team.

Following his days at Lafayette and his military service, Kirby continued his involvement with football, serving for many years as a member of the National Football Foundation and the College Hall of Fame's board of directors. He served as the vice-chairman of the College Hall of Fame from 1989-1996 and in 2000 was honored with the organization's Gold Medal.

In 1967, Kirby succeeded his father, Allan Price Kirby, as the CEO of Alleghany Corporation, where he was the President, Chairman, CEO, or all three, for forty years. He has also served as a director of more than 40 corporations and financial institutions.

Kirby has received numerous honors and accolades for his work both in athletics and in business. He holds honorary degrees from Lafayette, St. Joseph's, Drew and Wake Forest and received the Sports Illustrated Silver Anniversary All-American Award as well as the NCAA 25th Year Citation.

Kirby currently resides in New Vernon, N.J. He and his wife, Walker, have three sons, all Lafayette College graduates: F.M. Kirby III '80, S. Dillard Kirby '81 serves as Executive Vice President and Executive Director of the F.M. Kirby Foundation and Jefferson Kirby '84 is a member of the Lafayette Board of Trustees.
