Lafayette Splits Weekend Matches

EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette men’s tennis team split a pair of matches over the weekend. The Leopards made the short trip to Bethlehem on Friday, but fell to rival Lehigh, 7-0. The team returned to Easton on Saturday and blanked visiting Rider, 7-0. The Leopards improved to 5-8 overall, and dropped to 1-3 in the Patriot League.

Against Lehigh, sophomore Brandon Goldstein was defeated at first singles, 6-2, 6-2. Senior Scott Gelbman dropped a, 6-4, 6-0 decision at second singles, while a pair of freshman Gavin Studner and Brian Stefanowicz each fell at third and fourth singles respectively. Classmate Chris Matturri and sophomore Jake Lazer lost at fifth and sixth singles.

In doubles, Goldstein and Gelbman were defeated, 8-3, Stefanowicz and Lazer lost, 8-3, and Studner and Matturri fell, 8-2.

The Leopards handed Rider a 7-0 defeat on Saturday in Easton. At first singles, Goldstein took care of Rollie Malfitano, 6-2, 6-0. Gelbman and Studner won at second and third singles, 6-1, 6-0 and 7-5, 6-0. At fourth and fifth singles, Stefanowicz and Maturri each shut out their opponents, 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles, Goldstein and Gelbman earned an 8-0 win at first doubles. Stefanowicz and Lazer teamed up at second doubles and were victorious, 8-4. In the third doubles match, Studner and Matturri took care of Rider, 8-0.

Lafayette travels to Philadelphia on April 7 to take on St. Joseph’s at 2 p.m.
