Lafayette Splits Weekend Matches

EASTON, Pa. – The Leopards men’s tennis team routed visiting Wagner, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon and then traveled to Jersey City, and were defeated by St. Peters, 7-0 on Sunday.

Freshman Chris Matturri led the way with a silver set in his 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles, while classmate Brian Stefanowicz blanked Steve Nakajima in their No. 6 singles match. Another freshman Gavin Studner had no trouble at No. 4 singles, winning 6-1, 6-1. No. 1 singles, sophomore Brandon Goldstein defeated Christian Grau, 6-2, 6-2. Junior Will Mercorella and senior Scott Gelbman won at No. 2 and 3 singles respectively.

In the doubles matches, Lafayette had little trouble with Wagner. Mercorella and Gelbman handed the Seahawks No. 1 double duo an 8-2 loss. Goldstein and sophomore Jake Lazer won their second doubles match, 8-1, while Studner and Stefanowicz swept third double, 8-0.

The Leopards struggled Sunday afternoon with only Studner and Stefanowicz winning their third doubles match, in a 7-0 defeat at St. Peters.

Lafayette returns to the court on Friday March 8, hosting St. Francis (Pa.) at 1 p.m.
