Three Lafayette Swimmers Earn All-Patriot League Honors
March 12, 2004
EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Three Lafayette swimmers have earned All-Patriot League recognition for their performances at the Patriot League Championships at Navy held Feb. 26-28.
Senior Chris Grabowski (Port Carbon, Pa./Pottsville Area) and freshman Liz Helwig (Basking Ridge, N.J./Madison) are members of the All-Patriot League First Team, while sophomore Greg Van Volkenburg (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) claims All-Patriot League Second-Team honors.
Grabowski earns his second straight selection to the all-league team after a pair of individual top-five finishes at the 2004 Patriot League Championships. He took second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:49.54, the second-fastest time in school history. He also finished fifth in the 200 IM. Grabowski was named Patriot League Men's Swimmer of the Week twice during the season.
Helwig completed a remarkable freshman season by breaking a trio of individual school records at the Patriot League Championships. She opened the weekend by shattering the school record in the 200 IM, touching the wall in 2:06.76 in the preliminaries. She later finished fifth in the finals. Helwig followed that with a new school-record 56.74 in the prelims of the 100 butterfly. Her finals time of 56.80 was also below the previous record of 58.48. Finally, she broke the 100 freestyle record in the prelims with a clocking of 52.95 and later finished eighth in the finals. Helwig was also part of the record-setting 800 freestyle relay team that finished fifth and was named Patriot League Swimmer of the Week once during the season.
Van Volkenburg notches a spot on the second team after scoring in six different events at the Patriot League Championships. Individually, he took sixth in the 100 backstroke (51.72) and ninth in the 200 backstroke (1:53.84). Both times were new personal-bests and rank fifth and fourth, respectively, all-time at Lafayette. Van Volkenburg was also a part of four scoring relays: the 400 medley relay (fourth), 400 freestyle relay (fourth), 200 medley relay (sixth) and 800 freestyle relay (seventh).
Lafayette's men's and women's teams both finished seventh at the Patriot League Championships.
