Read Coach Jim Dailey's Comments on the Bucknell Dual Meet

Jan. 16, 2003

Welcome to the coach's corner!

Happy New Year!! I hope everyone's new year is off to a great start. Our teams' new year has started off great.

The winter training trip this year was in Plantation, Florida. The weather cooperated for the first time in three years. The high temperatures were between 68-74 and the low temperatures were between 49-58. The pool was 82 degrees and was a gorgeous facility with two eight-lane 50-meter pools. The athletes tanned everyday and many swam in the ocean mile swim. The best part of the trip was being able to train long course and short course. The past two years we were only able to train long course. The body gets used to swimming long course stroke rates and when we return to campus and swim Bucknell we usually don't swim very well because we are not used to short-course racing. This year with training both long and short course we swam some outstanding races against Bucknell.

The men came up just short. However, the performances were about 200% better than ever before. Chris Grabowski set a new school record in the 1000 free with a time of 9:48.91. He had a busy day winning the 1000 free, 200 back with a time of 1:54 and the 500 free at 4:45. Jakub Pritz turned in season bests in the 50 and 100 free. He swam 21.35 and 47.85 in each event. Freshman Greg Van Volkenburg had strong performances in the 200 and 500 free events, swimming 1:46 and 4:53, respectively. Junior Nate DeLong had good swims in the 100 and 200 back events. Junior Steven Berkowitz swam well in the 100 and 200 fly events with a 53.27 and 1:57 in both events. Sophomore flier Colin Sinatro swam season-best times in the 100 and 200 fly events going 54.55 and 2:04.04. The men left the meet with a strong sense of accomplishment and look forward to swimming Colgate on Wednesday.

The women came up short against the team predicted to win the Patriot League Championships this year. Even though they are predicted to win, it did not deter our women from swimming season-best times. Senior Brenda Thayer was amazing in the 1000 free (10:43) and 200 IM (2:13). First-year swimmer Jen Totten won the 200 breast and is closing in on Corinne Brophy's 200 breast record. Sophomore diver Crissy MacDonald won the 1-meter diving event and qualified for the ECAC Championship with the effort. Sophomore Jenny Moerschbacher swam very well in the 200 free (1:58), 50 free (26.12) and 200 back (2:15). The women finished the meet feeling very good about the effort and performances of the day and look forward to meeting Colgate.

Overall, I was very happy with how we did. With returning from the winter training trip one day earlier, having to get on a bus to Bucknell and swimming as fast as we did, I am very optimistic about beating Colgate and improving our seed times for Patriot League Championships. This is the most optimistic I have felt at this point in the season in at least four years. Right now we have a lot of momentum on both teams heading toward Patriot League Championships.

I'll catch you with my next report. Happy New Year.
