EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The men's swimming and diving team opened its 2000-01 season on Saturday by winning the Lafayette Invitational at Ruef Natatorium. The Leopards took on Kutztown, St. Peter's and Seton Hall to finish atop the scoreboard with 265 points in the meet.

Junior Matt Haggerty (Delran, N.J./Holy Cross) won the final heat of the 500 freestyle for the Leopards with a time of 4:59.88 and took second place in the 1650 freestyle final. Senior co-captain Rob Bateman (Lebanon, N.J./Pennington) won the 100-yard backstroke and the men's 400 medley relay team topped the leaderboard for the Leopards.

Next up for the swimmers is the Maroon and White Intrasquad/Alumni Meet on Oct. 28 while the divers travel to the Delaware Diving Invitational that same day.
