ANNAPOLIS, Md. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette freshman Liz Helwig (Basking Ridge, N.J./Madison) set her second school record in as many days to highlight day two of the 2004 Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships at Navy.

Helwig took second in the 100 butterfly in 56.80. Her time of 56.74 in Friday's prelims set a new school mark, breaking the previous record of 58.48 set by Carey Krause in 1991. Both of Helwig's swims in the 100 fly on Friday were faster than the previous record, and she is now just the second Lafayette woman to swim the 100 fly in under 60 seconds.

On Thursday, Helwig broke her own school record in the prelims of the 200 IM.

Helwig later joined Jenny Moerschbacher (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove), Maura Dailey (Oreland, Pa./Springfield Twp.) and Sara Berberich (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) on the 800 freestyle relay team that touched the wall in a school-record 7:50.33. The Leopards took fifth in the event.

The Lafayette men were led by a sixth-place finish by Greg Van Volkenburg (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) in the 100 backstroke (51.72).

After two days of competition, Lafayette's men's and women's teams both sit in seventh place. Bucknell leads the rest of the women's field by nearly 200 points, while Navy has a 207.5 point cushion atop the men's field.
