Nov. 10, 2009

EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette men's soccer team, heading to its eighth-straight Patriot League Tournament, saw two of its players earn All-Patriot League honors. Senior Philip Nelson was named the Patriot League Goalie of the Year, the first ever Leopard to earn the honor, while B.J. Glenn earned Second-Team status.

Nelson's Goalie of the Year accolade also earned him a spot on the league's First Team, Lafayette's first First-Team selection since 2007 and the first all-league honor of his four-year career. Glenn also earned his first career all-league selection.

Nelson finished the regular season at the top of the Patriot League in goals-against average (0.59), save percentage (.862) and shutouts (9). Those nine shutouts are third most in Lafayette single-season history. In addition, his goals-against average is currently the best-single season mark in program history, while his save percentage is sixth all-time.

For his career, Nelson boasts 20 shutouts, tied for third most in Leopard history. He has been named the Patriot League Goalie of the Week seven times in his career, including three occasions this fall, tying him with Colgate's David Cappuccio (2006-08) for the most career weekly awards. His career 0.64 goals-against average is also currently the best mark in Patriot League history.

B.J. Glenn earned All-Patriot League Second-Team honors

Glenn, meanwhile, earned second-team status after a season in which he led the team in scoring for the second consecutive year. The junior finished the regular season with six goals and one assist for a team-leading 13 points. Four of those six scores have been game winners, second most in the Patriot League.

The junior missed the first three games of the season due to injury, but made up for lost time by netting four goals in his first six games back on the field, including the double-overtime game winner against Holy Cross on Sept. 26.

Through his first three seasons as a Leopard, Glenn has racked up 17 goals and four assists for 38 points. Those 17 scores place him in a tie for 12th place in Lafayette history. He was named Offensive Player of the Week once this fall, bringing his career Player of the Week selections to five (three Offensive, two Rookie).

Nelson is a Mechanical Engineering major while Glenn is majoring in Government and Law. Both players are balancing a full academic schedule this semester. Nelson is enrolled entirely in engineering courses while Glenn is taking two Government and Law courses in addition to History and Physics courses.

Lafayette closed out its regular season with a 3-0 win over Navy to earn the team a spot in the Patriot League Tournament for the eighth straight season, matching Colgate (1992-99) for the longest streak in league history. The Leopards' 10-6-2 record this fall is their ninth straight winning season and the team has finished with 10 or more victories in six of the previous seven years. In addition, Lafayette is making its league-leading 17th Patriot League Tournament appearance.

The No. 4 seeded Leopards, in search of their seventh league championship, will take on No. 1 seed Bucknell on Friday at 5 p.m. in Lewisburg, Pa.
