Offense, Defense Recognized
Oct. 26, 2009
EASTON, Pa. - Two Lafayette men's soccer players picked up Patriot League awards as junior B.J. Glenn was named the Offensive Player of the Week and senior Nick Leigh was tabbed the Defensive Player of the Week. The honors come following two Lafayette shutouts last week. Lafayette played Cornell to a scoreless tie on Tuesday night and followed that with a 2-0 win over Army on Sunday afternoon. Leigh helped anchor the Leopards' defense in both games while Glenn scored the first goal, which stood as the game winner, in Sunday's victory. Glenn made every effort to put a goal on the scoreboard against Cornell, taking four shots, but the team left Ithaca with a scoreless tie. The junior finally broke through with a goal in the 22nd minute against Army, his third game winner of the fall. He took four more shots in the game, bringing his season total to 25, second-most on the team. Since missing the first three games of the fall, Glenn has scored five goals, tied for the team lead. He has 11 points to his name, good for second on the team.
Leigh, meanwhile, picked up his second defensive player award this season. The senior has been one of the Leopards' most dependable defenders this fall and played a key role in the two shutouts last week. He helped limit Cornell to just six shots on goal and without a single shot in either overtime period. Leigh followed that by holding the Black Knights to a single shot on goal and a total of only eight shots. He also got in on the offense side of things, adding his first career assist on Sam Feldbaum's insurance goal in the second half. Leigh has started 14 of 15 games this fall and has been on the field for eight Lafayette shutouts. Teams are averaging only 0.93 goals per game against the Leopards and the entire Lafayette defense has helped goalie Philip Nelson lead the league in both shutouts (8) and goals-against average (0.60). Glenn is a Government and Law major who is a member of the Investment and Sports Marketing clubs as well as Student Movement Against Cancer. He is also a Gateway Ambassador. Leigh has been involved in on-campus research in the biology lab for the past year, including a stint on campus this summer. He also serves as one of the team's peer mentors. The Leopards have a quick turnaround as they host Columbia on Tuesday at 7 p.m. They return to league play on Friday when they travel to Bucknell for an 8 p.m. match that will be nationally televised on Fox Soccer Channel.
