Suprise Leads Quinnipiac Past Lafayette
Sept. 2, 2012
HAMDEN, Conn. - Philip Suprise's hat-trick propelled Quinnipiac to a 3-1 win over Lafayette Sunday afternoon. Junior Alec Golini scored the Leopards' lone goal, his second of the season.
Lafayette (1-2-0) went down early in the match when Suprise scored an unassisted goal at the 7:48 mark. The QU striker fired a shot that ricocheted off the post and crossed the line behind Nathan McDonald.
The Leopards answered in the 23rd minute when Golini netted his second goal in as many games. Golini's marker came on a one-time shot from Sean Peckham's service into the penalty area, and leveled the score at 1-1. The shot beat Bobcats' keeper Borja Angoitia, who racked up six saves in the match.
Fourteen minutes after Golini's equalizer, Suprise put in his second of the afternoon. Machel Baker sent a cross to the near post, where Suprise headed it past McDonald for the eventual game-winner. The Bobcats held on to take a 2-1 lead into the locker room after shots on goal by Michael Bloom and Bryan White in the final five minutes.
Nearly 13 minutes after intermission, McDonald came off his line to try to defend Suprise, who ran onto a ball through the Leopards' defense from William Daniels. Suprise sidestepped the Lafayette keeper and slipped his third goal into the back of the net.
McDonald made three stops in the match, and Lafayette had slight advantages in shots (11-10) and corners (3-2).
Lafayette returns to College Hill on Friday when it welcomes Cornell to Oaks Stadium for its home opener at 7 p.m.
Golini's goal (23') was the third of his career.
Tom McCutcheon made his first start of the season and fifth of his career.
