Men's Soccer Begins New Era With First Scholarship Recruiting Class
Feb. 27, 2007 EASTON, Pa. - Head coach Dennis Bohn has acquired the commitments of seven student-athletes who will join the Lafayette men's soccer program as part of its first scholarship class since joining the Patriot League in 1990. The Class of 2011 features two midfielders and a forward from Pennsylvania, a forward, midfielder and a defender from New Jersey and a goalkeeper from Indiana. "This recruiting class certainly met our staff's goals in terms of speed, size and technical ability. Our assistant, Bryan Laut, did a tremendous job of helping to organize this group." Bohn said. "We believe that these talented, young players understand the tradition of the Lafayette men's soccer program and have a vision to build on our prior success." B.J. Glenn (Philadelphia, Pa./Shipley School) is a highly-decorated forward who scored 79 career goals at the Shipley School. As a senior, the team captain was selected First Team All-Area by the Philadelphia Inquirer. He also earned First Team All-Main Line Times honors for his fourth straight season and capped his career by being named Main Line Times Player of the Year. Glenn is a is a member of the FC Delco Black squad which won the Eastern Pennsylvania state championship and the Region 1 Premier League title. He also played for the Eastern Pennsylvania '89 ODP (Olympic Development Program) team and Region 1 ODP team. In 2005, he was selected to make a trip with the Region I team to compete in Argentina. "B.J. is one of the most explosive players in the country and his speed is second to none," Bohn said. "We feel that he has a chance to be a difference maker for our team." Justin Kamine (Oldwick, N.J./Voorhees) also joins the Leopards' program at the forward spot. He garnered First Team All New Jersey Group 3 and Soccer Coaches Association of New Jersey (SCANJ) All-Central Jersey First-Team honors as a senior. Kamine, who was named the Express-Times Player of the Year, served as a team captain at Voorhees High School and set school records for goals in a season (20) and points in a career (108). The 6-2 Kamine is also a member of the North Hunterdon Magic at the club level. His older brother, Matt, is a senior captain on the Lafayette baseball team. "Justin is the epitome of a target forward," Bohn said. "He is a strong, physical player who has the ability to dominate in the air." Midfielders Sam Feldbaum (Narberth, Pa./Friends Central) and Dan Bergen (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury), who play club soccer together for the Nether Providence Mustangs, will be reunited at Lafayette. Feldbaum earned Main Line Times First-Team accolades and was also the Friends League MVP. An All-State selection by the PSCAA, the 6-3 Feldbaum also played on the same Eastern PA '89 ODP team as Glenn. "Sam is a unique player who, at 6-3, is very composed on the ball," Bohn said. "He's a left-footed playmaker who can orchestrate our team." Bergen was a team captain as a senior and collected All-Suburban One League First-Team honors while competing at Pennsbury High School. "Dan is a tough, gritty player who exhibits all of the ideal characteristics that define Lafayette soccer," Bohn said. "He can play either in the central midfield or as a center back." Stephen Macurdy (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) is the third midfielder in the class and is coming off a senior campaign in which he earned SCANJ All-State honors. The South Jersey Soccer Coaches Association (SJSCA) named him First-Team All-South Jersey and selected him as its Midfielder of the Year. Macurdy was tabbed as a Regional All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). He plays club soccer for the Mt. Laurel United Raptors and was a member of the New Jersey '88 ODP team. "Stephen is an exceptionally skilled player who is very crafty on the ball. He has the ability to beat defenders off the dribble in 1 v. 1 situations," Bohn said. "He will come in and challenge for the vacancy at outside midfielder created by the graduation of Thomas Harju." Andreas Kustas (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley), who was high school and club teammates with Macurdy is the lone defender among the incoming group of seven. Kustas was a two-time First-Team All-South Jersey selection from the SJSCA and thrice earned All-South Jersey First-Team honors from the Camden Courier-Post. Kustas played on the New Jersey '89 ODP team. Kustas was a member of the Region 1 ODP team and was selected to travel with the team to Italy in 2006 when he was named tournament MVP. "Andreas is a rare breed of power and skill who at 6-2 can control the game in the air," Bohn said. "He is a terrific distributor out of the back with an ability to drive the ball with either foot." Andrew Pianko (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) is the final addition to the Lafayette roster and comes to College Hill from the Hoosier State. Pianko was a member of the Carmel United Cosmos on the club level, a squad which claimed five straight state titles. The All-Marion County selection will compete for the starting goalkeeper spot vacated by the graduation of Scott Backus. "Our coaches rated Andrew as one of the top goalkeepers in the country last summer. We're expecting that his experience at the club level will translate to him being a top college goalkeeper," Bohn said. "His leadership skills give him the ability to step in and immediately compete for playing time." Lafayette finished last season with an 11-4-2 record and fell a penalty kick short of the NCAA Tournament. The Leopards graduate four seniors, three of whom were starters.
