Vare Lifts Leopards to Overtime Win vs. Yale
EASTON, Pa. -- Evan Vare's goal in the 100th minute lifted the Lafayette men's soccer team to a 2-1 overtime win over Yale on Tuesday night at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium.
Vare took a cross from Kyle Robbins on the right side near the Yale (3-6-1) bench from Kyle Robbins, trapped it with his chest and then volleyed it into the net for the game winner. It was his third goal of the season and first game-winning tally.
For the seventh straight game, the Lafayette defense held its opponent without a first-half goal, going to the locker room in a scoreless tie. The teams combined for just one shot on goal before intermission. Yale took the lead at 50:36. Kyle Kenagy crossed a ball from the right-hand side and Mark Winhoffer booted in a shot past drawn-out goalkeeper Brad Seeber for the 1-0 Yale lead.
The Leopards played much of the second half in Yale's end of the field, but could not convert until late in the game. Things picked up in the 89th minute. Ryan Goncalves had the ball near midfield, played a long cross to Vare on the right wing and Vare dribbled through the box and left the ball for Martin Ssessanga who tapped in the game-tying goal (his second goal of the season).
Buoyed by the late tally, Lafayette (2-10) controlled the tempo in the first extra session on its way to the second win of the season.
Brad Seeber registered his first win in goal this season, stopping one shot while allowing one goal in 99 minutes.
The Leopards return to action on Saturday at Lehigh in a 6 p.m. Patriot League tilt.
