PHILADELPHIA -The Lafayette men’s soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against La Salle on Sunday afternoon at McCarthy stadium. The Explorers used a goal in the 90th minute to even the score and send the game into overtime. 

La Salle’s score came with 34 seconds to play in regulation. Mike Stanton put his head on a ball that was turned away by Lafayette goalie Alexander Leavy, but the rebound bounced to Jason Plumoff, who fed Joe Farrell for the equalizer. 

With the tie Lafayette is now 1-3-1 on the season, while La Salle moves to 3-1-1. The Explorers finished the day with a 26-15 shots advantage and forced Leavy to make a career-best 12 saves. La Salle also took 11 corners, compared to Lafayette’s three. 

Lafayette went on top in the 22nd minute with a tally from senior Kyle Scharfenberg. Chandler Fraser-Pauls controlled the ball at the top corner of the penalty area and sent a pass to the far post where Scharfenberg was positioned for the goal. The goal is Scharfenberg’s first of the season and the 12th of his career. 

La Salle goalkeeper John McCarthy finished the afternoon with five saves. Of Leavy’s 12 saves, 11 came in the second half and overtime. 

Lafayette hosts Drexel on Wednesday evening at Oaks Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
