Lafayette 3, Stony Brook 2 (OT)
September 1, 1999 EASTON, PA - Jake Ross' (Pottersville, NJ/Pingry School) second goal of the game lifted the Lafayette College men's soccer team to a 3-2 overtime win versus Stony Brook on Wednesday in both teams' season opener. The senior forward headed in a crossing pass from Jorge Izquierdo (Riverside, CT/Greenwich) 9:30 into the first overtime session to give the reigning Patriot League champions their first win of the season. Stony Brook initiated the scoring at 22:15 when Moses Sarr scored on a pass from Bryan Baracaldo. Lafayette answered seven minutes later, as Izquierdo hit the back of the net on a pass from senior Dan Hughes (Pomona, NY/Saddle River Day School). Stony Brook's Sarr concluded the first-half scoring with an unassisted goal at 37:10. In the second half, Ross netted the game-tying score at 79:57 on an assist from senior Ryan Atwood (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson). Ross' second goal of the game at 99:30 ended the game. The senior captain recorded nine goals in all of the 1998 season and managed three-game winning goals in a campaign that saw Lafayette finish 16-5 and qualify for the NCAA Tournament. Junior Craig Schroeder (Cranbury, NJ/Princeton) was in goal for Lafayette, managing five saves in the win.
Lafayette will next play on Friday at 4 p.m., when it hosts Colonial Athletic Association and perennial power Richmond at Metzgar Fields. The game features the return of former Lafayette head coach and current Richmond head coach Jeff Getler. Getler, along with Nelson Rodriguez and current Lafayette head coach Tim Lenahan are the only coaches ever to lead Lafayette to a Patriot League title.
