Go Leopards!

September 3, 1999

EASTON, PA - The Lafayette College men's soccer team came up on the short end of a 1-0 decision in a battle of 1998 league champions. Richmond, 1998 Colonial Athletic Association champion and NCAA Tournament participant, dealt reigning Patriot League champion Lafayette a 1-0 loss behind a goal by Richmond senior forward Andy Moden.

Moden, who gave the Lafayette defense trouble all night, led the Spiders with six shots and managed to connect at the 66-minute mark off a pass from Keith Donohue for the game winner.

Lafayette was held to just one shot in the first half, but registered three in the second half, including a key scoring chance by senior Ryan Atwood (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) at the 71-minute mark. Atwood's second shot of the match was intercepted on a diving deflection by Richmond goalie Shawn Alexander.

Junior Craig Schroeder (Cranbury, NJ/Princeton) battled injury to turn in a strong performance between the pipes for Lafayette. Schroeder recorded seven saves, including several diving stops.

The game marked a homecoming for Richmond Head Coach Jeff Gettler, who recorded a 44-26-8 record while serving as head coach at Lafayette. Gettler is best remembered at Lafayette for leading his Leopard squad to a Patriot League title in 1994.

Lafayette finishes out its three-game homestand with a match against Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday, Sept. 8, at 4 p.m.

Lafayette is coming off a 16-5 season which included a Patriot League title and berth into the NCAA Tournament.
