Men's Lax Completes 2017 Campaign at Colgate
HAMILTON, N.Y. - Sophomore goalie Jonathan Anastos was sensational for the Lafayette men's lacrosse team in the season finale on Friday evening in Hamilton, N.Y., but the Leopards ended their year with an 11-6 loss to Colgate.
Anastos made a career-high 19 saves on the night, allowing 11 goals, with three coming during extra-man opportunities. The sophomore has now set career-high's in saves in back-to-back games, stopping 17 shots a week ago in the 11-7 loss to Bucknell, and his 19-save effort was the most by a Patriot League player this season.
Senior co-captain Kevin Lewis finished off his career with a hat trick, leading the Lafayette offense with three goals on the night. Sophomore Conor Walters added a pair, while classmate Connar Dehnert registered a goal and an assist to round out the scoring.
Lafayette began the game on the front foot as Lewis and Walters netted a pair in the first 12 minutes to give the Leopards the early advantage late in the first quarter. A seven-goal run from the Raiders, though, put the Leopards in an 8-2 hole through the halftime break.
Walters stopped the run with 4:56 to play in the third quarter, but two more Colgate tallies finished off the third, making it 10-3 into the final period.
Lafayette was determined to get back into it as two from Lewis and a third from Dehnert made it a four-goal game with less than three minutes to play, 10-6. Unfortunately, the ball didn't bounce the Leopards' way as the Raiders added an insurance tally and saw out the final time with an 11-6 finishing margin.
Colgate held a 49-34 advantage in shots and forced 20 Lafayette turnovers compared to nine of their own. Freshman John Becker was a bright spot at the faceoff X, winning 12 of the game's 20 battles.
The loss finishes off the Maroon and White campaign with a record of 2-12 and 1-7 in Patriot League play.
