Second, Fourth Quarter Spurts Gives No. 8 Army 12-4 Decision Over Men's Lax
April 15, 2008
EASTON, Pa. - For the better part of the first half during Tuesday night's Patriot League contest, it looked as though the Lafayette men's lacrosse team was going to give No. 8 Army all it could handle at Rappolt Field. However, second and fourth quarter spurts from the Black Knights catapulted them to a 12-4 decision over the Leopards. Army controlled the ball in the opening minutes, keeping play in its offensive end and put the game's first goal on the board at the 10:04 mark on a Alex Morse unassisted tally. The Black Knights jumped out to 2-0 lead before Lafayette freshman Cesar Munoz took a restart into Army territory and roped a shot past goalkeeper Adam Fullerton to cut the Black Knight lead in half (2-1) with 9:09 left in the quarter. The two teams remained at a stalemate for the remainder of the opening quarter. Army used a man-advantage goal to start the second quarter and regain its two-goal lead. Lafayette again responded, this time for senior defenseman Peter VanderDrift, who controlled the ball in the Leopard defensive zone and took it the length of the field and capitalize on a give-and-go from sophomore Steve Serling to find the back of the net. However, Army tallied the half's final three goals to take a 6-2 lead into intermission. Sophomore Brett Djaha opened the second half scoring off Serling's second assist of the evening with 8:21 remaining in the third quarter to cut the Lafayette deficit back to three (6-3). The Black Knights began to pull away from the Leopards in the next four minutes, notching three goals from the 7:30 mark to its third goal of the quarter with 4:54 remaining to lengthen its lead to 9-3.
Djaha returned the assist to Serling minutes later to close out the quarter with an even-strength goal at the 1:27 mark. Army outscored Lafayette 3-0 in the final frame to record the 12-4 decision. The Black Knights outshot the Leopards 36-22 and held a 19-15 edge on ground balls. Lafayette junior Jeff Canfield piled up 12 saves on the evening. Army was 15-for-20 on face-offs. Lafayette concludes the 2008 campaign on Sunday when they host Bellarmine in non-conference action. Face-off is set for 12:30 p.m., with Senior Day festivities to prelude the game. NOTES: VanderDrift's goal is the first of his career. The senior defenseman has started 42 career games for Lafayette. Djaha has now tallied a goal in five straight Leopard contests. Canfield notched double-digit saves for the sixth consecutive game. |
