Marist Rallies for 8-5 Men's Lacrosse Win Over Lafayette
April 12, 2005
EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Marist scored five straight goals in the second half to rally from a 4-2 deficit, then held on for an 8-5 win in non-league men's lacrosse action at Lafayette on Tuesday.
Freshman Jon Paulson tied a career high with three goals for Lafayette, while Bull Duerr and Tim Iuculano both netted hat tricks for the Red Foxes.
Paulson scored twice in the game's first 3:41 to stake the Leopards to an early 2-0 lead. Goals by Iuculano and Andrew Walsh, however, pulled Marist even at two at halftime.
Lafayette took its second two-goal lead midway through the third quarter. Sophomore Bart Seifert hit a slashing Leo Stinson with a pass from behind the cage that Stinson buried for his third goal of the year just 3:29 into the period. Paulson then took a pass from sophomore Sean Burek on the left wing and rifled a shot top shelf with just seven seconds left on a man-up opportunity to give the Leopards a 4-2 edge.
Marist, however, scored three goals in a span of 2:46 to take a 5-4 lead into the final quarter. Iuculano's second and third goals served as bookends, while Mike McGuire skipped a shot in front of Lafayette keeper Chris Rosa for the middle tally of the three-goal spurt.
Duerr scored three times in the final quarter to seal the win for Marist. His first goal, with 12:26 left, appeared to have been stopped by Rosa, but the shot's momentum helped the ball skid across the goal line. He capped the scoring with a man-up goal in the final minute.
Despite converting just 18-of-27 clears, Marist was able to control the tempo by winning 14-of-17 face-offs in the contest, including 8-of-11 in the second half.
Lafayette (1-10) hosts Colgate at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the regular season home finale. The Leopards close out the season at Lehigh on April 23 at 7 p.m.
