Second Quarter Sinks Men’s Lax at No. 19 Boston U.
BOSTON, Mass. – After a strong opening quarter that saw the Lafayette men’s lacrosse team with a lead over 19th-ranked Boston U., things were looking up. However, the Terriers came out in the second and proved their merit, scoring all seven goals to open up a 10-4 lead and never looked back, defeating Lafayette by a 15-7 score.
Senior co-captains Eric Joseph and Kevin Lewis were key cogs in the strong start for the Maroon and White as Joseph scored twice and Lewis added a goal and an assist in the opening frame. It was all BU in the second, though, as seven unanswered tallies took the game into the break at 10-4.
Just three goals were scored in the third quarter, with the lone from Lafayette coming from a Lewis-Jason Sands connection at 3:32 to cut the edge to six at 11-5. Two of the first three were Leopard tallies in the fourth quarter made it a 13-7 game, but the Terriers closed with a pair to squash any potential comeback hopes as the buzzer sounded on a 15-7 final.
Sophomore Jonathan Anastos picked up the loss, making six saves on the day between the pipes, while Matt Cortese saw his first action of the season, allowing a goal in 1:05 of playing time. BU led in shots, 33-24 and ground balls, 31-16, forcing Lafayette into 16 turnovers and holding the Leopards to 0-of-3 on extra-man opportunities.
Lewis finished with two goals and an assist to lead the Leopards’ offense, while Joseph tallied two goals and Conor Walters and Will McCarthy each found the back of the net once. Connar Dehnert also got in on the action, notching one assist on the day.
The loss drops Lafayette to 1-7 on the year overall and 1-4 in conference action, while BU improves to 9-1 overall and 3-1 in Patriot League play. The Leopards go out of conference for their next contest in a week’s time, traveling to Binghamton on Saturday with opening faceoff set for 12 p.m.
