Villanova Rolls to 14-4 Win in Men's Lacrosse

VILLANOVA, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Chris MacDonald scored four goals and handed out two assists to lead Villanova to a 14-4 win over Lafayette in non-conference men's lacrosse on Tuesday night. The Wildcats scored the first 13 goals of the match before Lafayette closed with four scores in the final 5:57. MacDonald got Villanova on the board 58 seconds into the first quarter and scored again four minutes later to give his team a 2-0 lead. Villanova's next two goals came on man-up opportunities, with Eric Heidenberger and Matt Starker converting. Starker scored three times on the evening, while Matt Panneton and Garrett Hohendorf found the net twice. MacDonald gathered all four of his goals in the first half, with the final score giving the Wildcats an 8-0 halftime lead. Sean Burek scored his first goal of the season off an assist from Ryan Spitz to put the Leopards in the scoring column. Brian Cronise netted his first career goal at 4:13, and Leo Stinson extended his streak of goals in consecutive games to seven with 1:11 remaining. Stinson had the assist on John Galassi's goal with 30 seconds left. Villanova held advantages in shots (37-25), ground balls (38-25) and face-offs (16-of-22) and improved to 2-2, while Lafayette falls to 0-3. Joe Canuso didn't allow a goal in 51:33 while making 11 saves in goal for the Wildcats. Jeff Canfield had 13 saves in 52:59 of playing time, and sophomore Dan Wernau made his first career appearance in goal over the final 7:01. Lafayette will return home to play Wagner on Saturday with a 1 p.m. start at Rappolt Field.
