Third Quarter Spurt Leads Nationally Ranked Army Past Lafayette

March 3, 2007

Box Score

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Facing the first of four current nationally ranked opponents and second in a row on this season's docket, the Lafayette men's lacrosse team came out on the short end of a 9-2 decision at No. 16 Army on Saturday afternoon at Michie Stadium.

In the second Patriot League contest for both teams, sophomore Porter Curran's man-up goal with just 1:06 left in the first quarter got the Leopards on the board after Army netted four straight to open. Freshman Matt Mersky assisted on the goal, as Curran beat Army keeper Adam Fullerton.

Lafayette (0-3, 0-1) played the Black Knights (5-0, 2-0) to a 4-1 halftime score after enduring a scoreless second period for both teams. However, it was a balanced Army club coming out firing in the third quarter, with four goals from as many players to jump ahead 8-1 at the start of the fourth.

Mersky, a Lancaster, Pa. native, netted his first collegiate goal just over two minutes into the fourth period, but it was a case of too little too late for the Leopards at that point.

Army peppered sophomore Jeff Canfield with 36 shots on the day, as the Lafayette keeper collected 10 saves on the afternoon. The Leopards' defense also shut down all five of Army's man-up opportunities, while converting on one of five extra-man chances.

Saturday's trip to West Point, N.Y. was the Leopards first of four straight games away from Rappolt Field. Lafayette heads to Jamaica, N.Y. to face-off against St. John's this Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m.
