EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette men's lacrosse team fell to 2-3 today after a hard-fought 8-5 defeat to visiting Marist. The Red Foxes improved to 3-0 on the season.  Marist used a 4-2 second quarter to take the lead and held off numerous Leopard opportunities before grabbing the three-goal victory.

Freshman Kevin Wanke led the Leopards with three goals on four shots.

Junior goalkeeper Jake Hyatt was stellar in net for the Leopards making 16 saves in the loss, while his counterpart for Marist Dave Scarcello got the win making seven saves.

Lafayette got the only goal of the first period, when Wanke took a pass from sophomore Brian Bock, and wrapped around the net to score.

Marist answered with three straight goals to open the second quarter before Wanke notched his second of the day just ten seconds later off a Matt Evans assist to cut the lead to 3-2.

The see-saw battle continued, as Marist again pushed the lead back to two (4-2), but Wanke responded with his third of the half off a Sonny Round assist, pulling Lafayette to within one just before the break.

Marist scored the first two goals of the third quarter to extend its lead to 6-3 with 10:50 left in the quarter.

Lafayette fought back when sophomore Cory Scheuerle netted the final goal of the session with 1:28 in the period to cut the Red Foxes lead to 6-4. He used a Bock assist, his second of the afternoon.

Less than a minute into the fourth quarter, Drew Nesmith fired past Hyatt making it 7-4. A man-up goal with 3:30 to play by Bock got the Leopards to within two, 7-5, but a man-up goal with Lafayette chasing finished the game 8-5.

Marist outshot the Leopards 41-21 overall and 24-12 on goal. Lafayette struggled from the faceoff circle winning just 3 out of 17 draws.

The Leopards will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon, when they host Delaware at 4 p.m. inside Fisher Stadium. The game will precede the Lafayette men's basketball quarterfinal game inside Kirby Sports Center at 7 p.m.
