Lafayette freshman Chad Bell earned a first alternate slot for U.S. Open sectional qualifying after holing out his second shot in a playoff at 6,522-yard, par-70 Morris County Golf Club in Morristown, N.J. As the first alternate from the local qualifying round, Bell may move on to sectional qualifying on June 3.
Bell birdied the 18th hole, a 412-yard par-4, to finish at two-over 72 and earn a spot in a six-man playoff for the two alternate positions. Five qualifying spots were awarded led by three players shoot even-par 70.
On the first hole of the playoff, Bell holed out his approach shot from 118 yards with a knock-down pitching wedge for eagle to earn the first alternate in dramatic fashion.
"Today was an awesome experience," said Bell, who had teammate and classmate Ben DeForest as his caddie. "Although I wish I would've been able to secure a qualifying spot, having Ben on my bag and holing out for eagle to make first alternate was still very special."
Bell was Lafayette's top finisher at the 2013 Patriot League Championships, finishing tied for 14th and leading a squad that saw three freshmen and a sophomore finish in the top 30.
