ITHACA, N.Y. - Led by a pair of freshmen, Lafayette's golf team sits in seventh place after the opening round of the 13-team Cornell Invitational. Chad Bell sits in a tie for third place overall and paces the Leopards with an even-par 72 on the 6,890-yard Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Cornell University. Fellow freshman Ben DeForest is just one back of Bell and is tied for sixth place overall.

St. Bonaventure leads the team scoring at 294 with four players in the 70s, with Binghamton three strokes back, Fordham five back and Bucknell of the Patriot League six back. The Leopards are just 10 strokes off the lead and will be looking to make up ground.

Heavy rains Friday shortened the event from three to two rounds. The final round starts Sunday at 8 a.m.

Lafayette's other counting scores in the opening round included sophomore Phil Rosengarden with a 78 and sophomore Mike Zausmer with an 81. Freshman Patrick Luther recorded an 82.
