Leopards Take 8th at Navy Fall Classic
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Lafayette golf team started the 2012 fall season with an 8th-place finish at the Navy Fall Classic, 28 strokes behind champion North Dakota State (565) on the 6,528-yard, par-71 Naval Academy Golf Club. After weather interrupted Saturday's opening round, Sunday saw clear skies, highs in the 70s and virtually no wind.
North Dakota State's three-under score of 565 tied as the second-lowest 36-hole score in tournament history and the Bison featured the top three performers of the weekend.
The Leopards were the top Patriot League squad in the tournament, finishing two strokes ahead of Navy's Gold squad and 18 better than Navy's White squad.
Freshman Patrick Luther paced the Leopards with a top-five finish, posting a one-over 71-72--143. Sophomore Mike Zausmer tied for 24th with a 73-75--148, while freshman Ben DeForest finished tied for 46th with a 79-73--152, sophomore Kirk Massie tied for 64th with a 76-82--158 and senior Dave Kafafian tied for 67th with an 82-77--159.
The Leopards next compete in the Rutgers Invitational, a Friday-Saturday event on Sept. 14-15.
