Bryant Named to Buck Buchanan Award Watch List

Nov. 9, 2017

EASTON, Pa. – Senior LB Brandon Bryant has been named to the STATS FCS Buck Buchanan Award Watch List for national defensive player of the year.

Bryant is one of six players added to the watch list on Wednesday, joining 27 previous nominees from across the FCS ranks.

The Buchanan Award, established in 1995, has sent past winners such as Dexter Coakley, Rashean Mathis, Jared Allen, Arthur Moats and Kyle Emanuel on to the NFL. A national panel of more than 150 sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and others will vote on 25 finalists following the regular season.

Bryant has made his case with an accumulation of numbers. The team captain ranks second in the nation in tackles with 116 (12.9 per game) and fifth for solo tackles with 61 (6.8 per game). He is also tied for the seventh-most tackles in a game in 2017 (19 - Harvard). The Cherry Hill, N.J. native is averaging 14.6 tackles per game over the last five contests and 13.5 in league play.

Three times this season (in three straight weeks), Bryant earned Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week honors after securing a nod to the 2017 Preseason All-Patriot League Team. In Patriot League play, he has helped the defense hold opponents to 7.5 points per game, and the opponent’s offense has not scored against the unit in nine quarters.

Lafayette is in the Patriot League title hunt, hosting Colgate on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in a battle of two first-place teams.
