O’Malley Secures Rookie of the Week Honors
EASTON, Pa. – Freshman quarterback Sean O’Malley (Beverly Hills, Calif./Loyola) has been named the Patriot League Football Rookie of the Week, it was announced on Monday afternoon.
In his second career start, the freshman completed 25-of-44 passes for 276 yards with three touchdowns and an interception in the Leopards’ home opener on Saturday vs. Sacred Heart. He completed passes to seven different receivers, including nine connections for 107 yards and a TD to his favorite target sophomore Nick Pearson.
In the opening week of the season at Monmouth, O’Malley became the first Lafayette player in the Patriot League era (since 1986) to start at quarterback as a freshman. In that game, O’Malley completed 27-of-43 for 262 yards with two TD’s and two INT’s, also completing passes to seven receivers.
The Rookie of the Week award is the first for a Lafayette player since Joey Chenoweth earned the honor on Sept. 28, 2015.
The schedule gets significantly harder this week, as the Leopards venture to Philadelphia to face No. 7/8 Villanova on Saturday at 6 p.m.
