Leopards Snatch Two Weekly Football Awards
EASTON, Pa. - Lafayette won two of four weekly Patriot League awards following its 17-14 win at William & Mary on September 8.
Senior quarterback Andrew Shoop (Danville, Pa./Danville) was named the League's Offensive Player of the Week. He completed 18-of-33 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown to take a 14-7 lead in the third quarter. The 18-yard strike came on a 3rd-and-15 play.
Shoop also picked up two first downs on a fourth-quarter drive that resulted in a field goal to give Lafayette a 17-7 lead. He spread the ball around to eight different receivers, and ran for 25 yards.Shoop led the Leopards to their first win over a Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) since 2005 (Richmond). This is the quarterback's third time being named Offensive Player of the Week, and first this season.
Freshman Jamel Smith (New Egypt, N.J./New Egypt) was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week. The wide receiver/punt returner had two receptions for 11 yards and a pair of key fourth-quarter punt returns for 28 yards to help the Leopards to the win. Both punt returns came in the fourth quarter. This is Smith's first Rookie of the Week award.
Lafayette plays its home opener on Saturday vs. Penn. Kick-off at Fisher Stadium is set for 6 p.m.
