EASTON, Pa. - The freshman and senior classes of Lafayette football players reported to the scenic College Hill campus for the start of football preseason camp on Wednesday. New for the 2009 camp, the coaching staff has paired each freshman with a senior mentor to help the newcomers adjust to college life. The freshman and senior will room together in McKeen Hall where the team will be staying during camp. The Leopards reported one week later than in recent seasons, as the team will not open the season until Sept. 12, having its open week the first week of the season (Sept. 5). On Wednesday, the seniors and freshmen underwent physicals, impact testing and an equipment check before each group had meetings with 10th year head coach Frank Tavani and the coaching staff. The sophomores and juniors reported on Thursday, and the team broke bread for its first full-team event followed by a team meeting and compliance instruction. The freshmen practiced at 2:30 p.m. at Fisher Stadium while the upperclassmen underwent conditioning and strength testing. The team's first full-team practice will be held Friday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. following positional meetings and weight training. Lafayette's first full-contact practice will be Aug. 18 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and the first night practice the next evening from 7:45 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. All practices are open to the public. Check back to www.GoLeopards.com every week day for coverage of training camp, including video highlights from Friday's practice with LSN All-Access' Matt Panto. Other season highlights will include senior captain Andrew Poulson writing a blog throughout training camp and the season. The tentative practice schedule follows. Time changes are likely due to many factors including weather.
