July 6, 2006
EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette senior offensive tackle Mike Saint Germain (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) has been named Honorable Mention Preseason All-America by The Sports Network.
Saint Germain was the eight-rated offensive tackle in I-AA in The Sports Network's list of positional rankings released last week. He is the only offensive player from the Patriot League named to either the first, second or honorable mention teams. In a previous installment of the rankings, released by position group, senior Jonathan Hurt was listed as the No. 22 tailback in I-AA.
Earlier this summer, Saint Germain was named First Team Preseason All-America by Lindy's College Football Preview, and defensive end Marvin Snipes was named to the second team. The senior left tackle was the only player on the offensive line to start all 12 games at the same position last season and was a first team All-Patriot League selection. He provided the protection for Lafayette to throw for a league-leading 244.3 yards per game in Patriot League games in 2005, and helped the Leopards rank second in the league with 365.7 yards of total offense per game.
Lafayette's Maurice Bennett was named Second Team Preseason All-America by The Sports Network a year ago, placing him on the national radar before the 2005 campaign began. Bennett made 133 tackles and seven sacks as a senior, earning him First Team All-America mention from The Sports Network and the Associated Press following the season.
The Leopards, one of eight teams selected to the 16-team NCAA Division I-AA Playoff field each of the last two seasons, open the 2006 season on Sept. 2 at 2 p.m. at Sacred Heart in Fairfield, Conn. The home opener at Fisher Field is scheduled for Sept. 16 at 1 p.m. against Penn.
