Captains Named for 2012 Football Season

Andrew Shoop is one of three senior student-athletes who will hold the title of captain for the 2012 season.

EASTON, Pa. - The 2012 Lafayette Leopards have given football team captain honors for the 2012 season to seniors Rick Lyster, Darius Safford and Andrew Shoop.

Being at the quarterback position, it was important for Andrew Shoop to take on a leadership role with the team in his senior season. Shoop took over the Leopard offense in the third game of 2011 against Penn and is one of seven returning starters for the unit. In his first start, he went 14-of-23 for 230 yards and four touchdowns. He earned Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week honors against Yale (10/15) and Colgate (11/5). Shoop finished the season with five multi-touchdown games and 15 touchdowns compared to 11 interceptions.

Anchoring the defensive line, Lyster led the team with three sacks last season and tied for second in tackles for loss with six totaling for a total loss of 24 yards. Starting all 11 games in 2011, Lyster is one of four returning starters for the Lafayette defense. He finished the year with 42 tackles, two quarterback hurries and a forced fumble earning him All-Patriot League Second-Team honors. He was also selected as the team's Defensive Line MVP.

Leading the way in the defensive backfield will be Safford at cornerback. Safford had a team-best four interceptions in 2011, including a game-sealing 100-yard pick six against Colgate (11/5). Safford finished the season with 49 tackles and eight pass break-ups for the Leopard secondary earning him Team-Defensive Back MVP honors. He is the team's top returning tackler.

Lafayette's spring preparatory season is underway, culminating in the annual Maroon-White Spring Scrimmage on April 21 at 10 a.m. Lafayette football opens the regular season Sept. 8 when its travels to William & Mary.
