Football Program Set to Begin Spring Practice

March 21, 2017

EASTON, Pa. – Lafayette’s spring football season gets underway this evening at Fisher Stadium as the Leopards will suit up for the first of 15 football practices concluding with the Maroon-White Spring Game on April 22 at 1 p.m.

Head coach John Garrett, who was hired in December of 2016 after the retirement of Frank Tavani, begins his first season as a head coach, bringing more than 25 years of experience coaching at the NFL and collegiate level.

Garrett and his coaching staff will be using this month-long spring season to get their first live looks at the returning Leopards.

“We’re going to use this spring season to evaluate everyone and then use that information to mold and adjust the system to what our players do best,” Garrett said. “We’ll be able to get to know our players and what they can do and begin to establish roles for certain players based on how they perform. Our message to the team is ‘go compete, be noticed and earn the position’.”

Garrett has said from the time that he was hired there will be no incumbents or returning starters and his thoughts on the eve of spring practice reflected that sentiment.

“As a coaching staff, we’re excited to find out what we have. There is information to be gathered, evaluations to be made and questions to be answered at every position. The players will answer them. We will go by what we see, encouraging them to compete and be noticed.”

The team’s practices are open to members of the Lafayette community and interested parties can expect “passion, emotion, enthusiasm and great energy.”

“We want everyone to watch us and say ‘these guys love football.’ They play like they love it and they have a great respect for the game and consider it an honor and a privilege to play it each day.”
