  • Head Coach Frank Tavani on the Leopards' Class of 2006

    March 6, 2002

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette's football coaching staff has announced its list of freshmen recruits set to enroll at the College this Fall as members of the Class of 2006, the second full-year recruiting effort under Head Coach Frank Tavani.

Tavani will enter his third season as the head coach with 33 recruits expected to report to preseason camp in August. A diverse and talented class, the recruits are coming from Lafayette's historically strong recruiting areas, as well as a few new regions. Ten are from Pennsylvania - including three from the Lehigh Valley, while eight are from New Jersey, seven from Maryland, three from Massachusetts, two from Florida and one each from Michigan, Ontario, and Virginia.

"Obviously there was a defensive point of emphasis, especially losing three starting linebackers to graduation," said Tavani. "Depth is as much a part of this rebuilding process as talent. We are excited to be adding both numbers and talent. This is as strong of a recruiting class we've had at Lafayette since I've been here."

Of the 33 recruits, 18 are projected by the Leopards' coaching staff as defensive players. Eleven are slated as interior linemen, including five offensive linemen. There are also six linebackers and six defensive backs, four tall wide receivers, two each at quarterback and fullback, and one each at tight end and running back. The average size of the five incoming offensive linemen is 6-5, 280, while the four wide receivers average 6-2, 179.

Lafayette concluded its 120th season of college football and second under coach Tavani. The Leopards held a lead in each Patriot League game this season, losing four contests by 10 points or less. The Leopards' spring practices begin Tuesday, April 2.
