EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette football staff has secured commitments from 24 student-athletes to join the Leopard football program.

The Leopards signed 12 players on the offensive side of the ball and 12 on the defensive side. The coaching staff filled its most pressing need, depth on the offensive line, with five signees. The Leopards lose three seniors from the 2004 front that paved the way for the offense to rank second in the Patriot League in rushing (212.8 yards per game).

Lafayette head coach Frank Tavani was most pleased with the efficiency with which this class was put together.

"We are only graduating 12 seniors from this past year's team, so we knew going in that this was not going to be a large class numbers-wise," Tavani said. "We only had 37 kids visit campus on just two recruiting weekends, and 24 of those 37 decided that Lafayette was the right place to further both their education and football career. We are extremely excited about the group we have coming in."

Six different states are represented in the class, with 10 recruits hailing from New Jersey. Five are from Pennsylvania, while Lafayette added three defensive players from the state of Florida.

Lafayette (8-4 overall, 5-1 Patriot League) earned the Patriot League's automatic berth to the NCAA Division I-AA Playoffs by virtue of its 24-10 win over Lehigh in the 2004 regular season finale. The Leopards are tentatively slated to open their Patriot League title defense at Marist on Sept. 3.
