EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette football coaching staff has secured commitments from 30 student-athletes to join the 2004, 2005 and 2006 Patriot League champions.

The Leopards will bring in 17 players on the defensive side of the ball, while the 11 offensive recruits include three quarterbacks and three wide receivers. Two kicking specialists round out the list.

The members of the Class of 2011 will come to College Hill from nine different states, with Pennsylvania claiming nine players and Florida following with seven. Lafayette signed three players each from Connecticut, Maryland and New York, and two from New Jersey. While the other states are already well-represented on Lafayette's roster, student-athletes from Kansas, Louisiana and Michigan will be the only players from their respective states when the Leopards gather for preseason practice in August.

"The 30 student-athletes that we signed showed a consistent interest in our academics, the quality of our football program, and our campus environment," said head coach Frank Tavani. "We emphasize our close-knit campus community and the involvement of faculty and staff in the recruiting process, and our ability to do that has helped us maintain a winning tradition and build a championship program."

"We went into the process this year focusing on maintaining depth at every position, but also bringing in quality players at both quarterback and wide receiver, and we were able to do that," Tavani said, noting the graduation of All-Patriot League selections Brad Maurer (quarterback) and Joe Ort (wide receiver).

"I'm extremely excited about all three quarterbacks that we signed. All three of them are very athletic, fierce competitors and proven leaders," Tavani mentioned.

"The wide receivers have tremendous speed and are outstanding athletes. Mitchell Bennett (Orange, N.J./Paramus Catholic) and Nathan Padia (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence) are both very big and physical, and Mark Layton (Sanford, Fla./Lake Mary) is extremely quick," Tavani said. "All three will immediately improve the quality of our wide receivers."

Defensively, the Leopards brought in the kind of depth that Tavani is looking for, adding five defensive linemen, six linebackers and six defensive backs.

The specialists are K/P Tom Kondash (State College, Pa./State College), who will represent Pennsylvania in the Big 33 Game, and K Davis Rodriguez (St. Petersburg, Fla./St. Petersburg Catholic). Both of Lafayette's kicking spots are open for competition following the graduation of second team All-Patriot League selection Rick Ziska, one of nine seniors to earn all-league status last season.

"We're looking forward to honoring the seniors at the banquet and the ring ceremony to celebrate our Patriot League championship this month," Tavani said. "Then we'll move on to the next chapter in Lafayette football and continue to cultivate our championship tradition with a new group of student-athletes."
