EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette football staff has secured commitments from 35 student-athletes to join the two-time defending Patriot League champion Leopard football program.

The class includes 16 players on offense, 18 on defense, and a kicker. The Leopards' recruits will come from nine different states - Pennsylvania (11), New York (7), New Jersey (6), Florida (4) and Georgia (3) all have multiple players represented, with one player each coming from Connecticut, Delaware, North Carolina and South Carolina.

"We are very excited to welcome these young men to campus," said head coach Frank Tavani. "We feel that it's an extremely strong class with depth across the board. Our goal was to replace the 28 seniors that will graduate this spring, and I think we were very successful in doing that. Over two recruiting weekends, we had 46 players visit us, and 35 of them decided that Lafayette was the best fit for them, both athletically and academically."

Lafayette signed at least one player at every position, including 13 linemen, six on the offensive front and seven on the defensive side of the ball. The staff also landed five linebackers to help replace graduating seniors Maurice Bennett, Blake Costanzo and Dion Witherspoon, who all received All-Patriot League recognition last season. Six defensive backs round out the list for the Leopards, which ranked ninth nationally in scoring defense (17.0 ppg) and 11th in total defense (296.9 ypg) in 2005.

A pair of quarterbacks, two tailbacks and a wide receiver will fill out the skill positions. Two tight ends and three fullbacks will provide versatility in the offense as well. Lafayette returns one or more players with starting experience at eight of the 11 spots on offense.

The Class of 2010 will be the first group to play all of its home games at the newly renovated Fisher Field, which is slated to undergo a $23 million transformation. The project will include new spectator seating, a state-of-the-art in-fill synthetic surface, lights and a press box. The second phase of the two-year project features construction of a football varsity house that will include locker rooms, offices and team meeting rooms, as well as sports medicine and strength and conditioning areas.

Lafayette won a share of its second straight Patriot League championship last season by virtue of its 23-19 win over Lehigh at Goodman Stadium. The win vaulted the Leopards into the I-AA Playoffs for the second straight season, where they fell 34-20 in the first round at eventual national champion Appalachian State.
