Jaworski Picks Up Rookie of the Week Honor

Dec. 4, 2017

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- Freshman Justin Jaworski of the Lafayette men's basketball team was selected as the Patriot League Rookie of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon. Senior co-captain Matt Klinewski was also given an honorable mention for his performances in a split week for the Maroon and White.

Jaworski has been stellar for Lafayette since returning from an ankle injury that delayed the start of his collegiate career by two games. The rookie has started in the last four contests and is second on the team in scoring at 14.0 points per night. The honor is the first Rookie of the Week award for the Maroon and White since Nick Lindner '17 was a five-time honoree during the 2013-14 season.

A Schwenksville, Pa. native, Jaworski put together an efficient week, missing on just six shots over two games, a one-point loss at Drexel on Wednesday and a 21-point win over Quinnipiac at home on Saturday. He was three points off the Lafayette freshman single-game scoring record at Drexel, pouring in 24 points on 9-of-14 from the field. That record was set by Otis Ellis '89 on Jan. 18, 1985, when he scored 27 points in a 101-77 win over Delaware.

Jaworski returned home to add 19 points in the Leopards' first win of the 2017-18 campaign on Saturday, a 79-58 triumph over Quinnipiac. He missed just one shot on the afternoon, going 7-for-8 from the field, 3-of-3 from three-point range and 2-of-2 from the foul line.

Klinewski has been a steady leader for Lafayette so far this season, leading the team in scoring and sitting third in the Patriot League at 19.3 points per outing. During the two games this past week, he averaged 21.5 points per game, including a 26-point effort against Quinnipiac, boasting a stretch of 14 straight points at the beginning of the second half to swing the game in Lafayette's favor.

Jaworski, Klinewski and the Leopards are back in action on Wednesday in the second game of a doubleheader at Kirby Sports Center. The Lafayette women are set to battle Princeton at 6 p.m., with the men to follow against Penn at 8 p.m.
