Klinewski ’18 Inks Professional Deal in Germany
PADERBORN, Germany – Matt Klinewski ’18, former standout on the Lafayette men’s basketball team, began his professional career this past weekend, inking a deal with Uni Baskets Paderborn of the ProA league in Germany. Klinewski joins Nathaniel Musters ’16, Seth Hinrichs ’15 and Dan Trist ’15 as the fourth Leopard currently playing professionally overseas.
“I am thrilled that my professional basketball career will start at Uni Baskets Paderborn,” Klinewski said. “I have thought a lot about my first spot, especially because I’ve never been able to play abroad before. The talks with Coach Naechster have given me confidence and I am sure Paderborn is the right place for me. I’m really looking forward to the guys, the city and especially the great fans and atmosphere in the hall.”
Klinewski was a two-time All-Patriot League performer with the Leopards from 2014-18, earning second-team laurels in 2018 and third-team honors in 2017. He finished in the top five in scoring in the Patriot League each of the last two seasons, becoming the 44th player in Lafayette history to eclipse the 1,000-point mark and sitting eighth on Lafayette’s all-time scoring list with 1,492 career points.
Klinewski joins three other Leopards currently playing on the international circuit. Nathaniel Musters ’16 will enter his second season with Aris Leeuwarden in the Netherlands in 2018-19, while Seth Hinrichs ’15 helped lead Vechta to a ProA championship this past winner and will compete with the team in the top league in Germany this winter. Dan Trist ’15, recently made a move back home to Australia and will compete with Melbourne United in Australia’s top division in 2018-19.
