July 2, 2007
EASTON, Pa. - Peter Schwethelm has been named the Lafayette men's basketball assistant coach, as announced by head coach Fran O'Hanlon on Monday. Schwethelm brings over a decade of coaching experience to the program, most recently as an assistant at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), a Division III school in New York.
At U.S.M.M.A., Schwethelm was in command of all recruiting aspects of the program. Prior to his time in New York, he was the video coordinator at Georgia Tech and Rice University. At Georgia Tech, he worked with both the men's and women's basketball team, as well as volleyball and baseball, handling video editing, tape exchange and scouting reports for his two years in Atlanta. While at Rice, he assisted with recruiting phone calls and mailouts, as well as on-campus visits.
He is the founder of the Georgia Basketball Coaches' Association (GBCA), implementing an organizational chapter and membership drive. In November 2003, Schwethelm started Dreams Within Reach, a non-profit program designed to help at-risk youths.
Schwethelm was the head coach of The Winston School in Dallas, Texas and assumed assistant coach duties at numerous other high schools throughout Texas.
He is an active member of the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and Texas High School Coaches Association. He received his bachelor's degree in history from Trinity University in San Antonio in 1999.
Schwethelm takes over for Andrew Toole, who assumed the top assistant responsibilities at Robert Morris University in April.
