Men’s Basketball Goes International in May
EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette men’s basketball program announced on Monday its plans for an international team trip this May, consisting of stops in Germany, Czech Republic and Hungary.
The trip will be the first for the Maroon and White since 2012, when the Leopards traveled to Belgium, England, France and the Netherlands. Lafayette will play three games against international clubs during its stay with a 10-member roster as graduating seniors and incoming freshmen are not allowed to participate due to NCAA regulations.
“Foreign trips check so many positive boxes,” head coach Fran O’Hanlon said, heading into his 24th season on College Hill. “We have a chance to bond as a team and get extra practices to prepare us for European competitions, which give us a head start on the coming season. It also presents our team with a great cultural experience, allowing us to see the sights and meet people from different countries. We are very excited and appreciative to have this opportunity.”
The Leopards will embark on May 19, spending the majority of their first day traveling to Munich, Germany. Two full days will be spent in Munich, where highlights include a visit of Dachau, the first Nazi concentration camp, as well as a tour of Allianz Arena, the third-largest stadium in Germany and home of FC Bayern Munich, one of the premier clubs in Bundesliga, Germany’s top professional soccer league.
The team will play its first game on Day 3 before packing up and moving on to Prague, Czech Republic for Days 4-7. Prague Castle is the main attraction for the first full day in Prague. Originally the seat of Czech royalty and nobility, the residence now serves as the home and office for the Czech President.
The team’s second game will take place on Day 5 in Prague, before a day of sightseeing for Day 6. The Leopards will take a tour of the Prague Crystal factory, known for its hand-cut crystals and Bohemian crystal glassware. Later that night, they’ll gather for one of two river cruises on their trip, sailing under the Charles Bridge and enjoying unique views of the city.
Day 7 kicks off the final leg of the three-country trip as the Maroon and White will pack up and set their sights for Budapest, Hungary. The first full day in Budapest on Day 8 of the trip will be filled with tours as the team will experience sights such as Heroes’ Square, City Park, the Szechenyi Baths, St. Stephen’s Basilica, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Chain Bridge, the Castle District, Matthias Church and Fishermen’s Bastion. The third and final game will also take place that night.
On Day 9, the team will be given the morning to explore the city before taking an afternoon river cruise on the Danube. That cruise will be the final planned activity for the group as Day 10 is filled with travel back to College Hill.
