Klinewski, Petrie Garner All-League Honors
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Senior co-captain Matt Klinewski and freshman Alex Petrie of the Lafayette men's basketball team picked up All-Patriot League honors as the league office announced the season's major award winners and all-league teams on Monday afternoon. Petrie was selected as the league's Rookie of the Year in addition to a spot on the Third Team and the All-Rookie team, while Klinewski earned second-team laurels after a third-team selection a year ago.
Klinewski led the Maroon and White in scoring this winter and finished the regular season third in the Patriot League at 16.4 points per game for his senior campaign. The Voorhees, N.J. native had his double-figure scoring streak climb as high as 25 games dating back to the final two contests of the 2016-17 campaign.
A consistent performer for the Leopards through his final three seasons on College Hill, Klinewski has led the Leopards in scoring in 29 of the last 60 games and added a three-point shot to his repertoire this year. The senior went 48-for-110 from beyond the arc this season as a 43.6 percent outside shooter.
"It's been extremely gratifying to watch Matt's development through the years," head coach Fran O'Hanlon said. "He's really become one of the elite scorers in the Patriot League."
A co-captain along with classmate Eric Stafford, Klinewski finished in the top five in the league in three different categories. In addition to his scoring, he was second in free-throw percentage (81.1%) and fifth in field-goal percentage (50.2%). Klinewski currently sits at 1,455 points for his career, owning the ninth spot on Lafayette's all-time scoring list.
Petrie is the third Patriot League Rookie of the Year in program history, joining Tyson Whitfield '01 and Stefan Ciosici '00 as the only Leopards to receive the honor. The selection is the first major award for the Maroon and White since Ryan Willen '12 was chosen as the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2012.
The rookie from Midlothian, Va. took the Patriot League by storm this winter, averaging 18.3 points per game in Patriot League contests, good enough for third in the league during conference play. Petrie's 15.3 points per game on the season overall ties the program record for rookies, set by Otis Ellis '89 in the 1985-86 season.
"Alex has made great strides from the beginning of the season to now," O'Hanlon added. "He's been a much-need constant on the offensive end."
Petrie has rewritten the rookie record books at Lafayette this season, breaking the scoring and three-point field goals records over the past two weeks. His 444 points topped the previous record of 384 set by Ciosici in 1996-97, while his 67 triples topped Mike Homer '00's 62 in 1996-97. That three-point number is also good for 14th on the program's single-season made threes list.
Klinewski and Petrie will lead their team into the Patriot League Tournament with a home game on Tuesday in the First Round. The seventh-seeded Leopards are set to host 10th-seeded American with tip-off set for 7 p.m.
